What we all want in life is love, support, ease, guidance, and success. If you just had all these things, you’d be happy right? Well, there is one quality that if you possess, all other matters in your life would be set in order. This quality is At-Taqwa; commonly translated as righteousness, piety, consciousness and fear of Allaah.
Taqwa is defined, by many scholars, as a comprehensive term meaning: to act according to Allaah’s obedience on a light from Allaah seeking His reward, and to avoid Allah’s prohibition upon light from Allaah while fearing His punishment.
Taqwa is what makes you get up early to pray fajr, despite how tired you are. It’s what makes you return the extra change the cashier gave you. It’s what makes you be strict on your kids in some issues even though you hate to see them upset. Taqwa is what makes you obey your husband even when you don’t want to. Taqwa is what makes you bite your tongue and avoid foul language when you are tempted to give someone a ‘piece of mind’. Taqwa is obedience to Allaah when no one else sees you.
Our ultimate goal in life is to get closer to Allaah so that we can live a life full of bliss and richness in Jannah, our ultimate home. Taqwa is the quality that will not only grant you a high status in the next life, but will attract all the success, prosperity, happiness, and ease you need in this life to make the goal of supreme success attainable. That is a promise from Allaah.
“Those who believed and had taqwa of Allaah. For them are glad tidings, in the life of the present world and in the Hereafter. No change can there be in the Words of Allaah. That is indeed the supreme success.” [Soorah Yoonus (10):63-64]
There are too many verses about the importance and benefits of taqwa, that we can’t mention them all. In this post I want to bring to your attention, not what awaits you in the hereafter, but how this esteemed quality can help you in your life as a Muslim mother.
Firstly, you always have Allaah on your side
“Verily, Allaah is with those people who have taqwa, and with those who are Muhsineen.” [Soorah an-Nahl (16):128]
How comforting it is to know that in all your pursuits and endevours Allaah is with you in support. In good times and bad times, Allaah is with those who have taqwa. No need to sob over unsupportive friends or family when the Lord of the worlds is on your side.
Secondly, you earn Allaah’s love
Surely Allaah loves the muttaqeen. [Soorah at-Tauba (9):4]
It is a natural humanistic desire to be loved and appreciated. Sometimes we even put up with abuse and oppression in search of this love or out of fear that we won’t find it elsewhere. But what’s the ultimate love and most worthy of your efforts? The love of Allaah! This is the love that will bring you the true and everlasting happiness you’re in search of. Adorn yourself with taqwa my sister!
Thirdly, absolutely nothing can harm you
When you feel like the world is coming in on you, you feel oppressed, helpless. you’ve been boycotted, abandoned, or betrayed. Taqwa creates a new force of support and protection for you, that no army of haters can break through. You can carry on with your life, duties, and goals without fear because you know you have Allaah’s loyalty, protection, and support.
Indeed, they will never avail you against Allaah at all. And indeed, the wrongdoers are allies of one another; but Allaah is the protector and ally of the muttaqeen.” [Soorah al-Jaathiyah, (45):19]
Fourthly, you become a better decision maker
As a mother, you probably make a 100 decisions a day. You make major and minor decisions that affect, not only you, but your children, your husband. Even your personal decision can impact the family as a whole. Allaah gives the mutaqoon a special criterion or signs to guide them in distinguishing right from wrong, the good from the bad, and the beneficial from the harmful. With this criterion you’re able to problem solve and make decisions pertaining to your life and deen with more insight and guidance.
“O you who have believed, if you have taqwa of Allaah , He will grant you a criterion [to judge between right and wrong] and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty.” [Soorah al-Anfaal (9):29]
Fifthly, you’ll always have stream of ready solutions
When you have taqwa or when you leave off something seeking Allaah’s pleasure, Allaah provides for you from places you could never imagine. He brings solutions to you and gets you out of every difficulty.
And whosoever has taqwa of Allaah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). [Soorah at-Talaaq, (65):2-3]
Sixthly, life just becomes easier
No one asks for hardships. We all want an easy life. With taqwa all of your affairs become easy, whether it be marriage, parenting, homeschooling, studying, business, personal goals, sickness etc. If you are obedient to Allaah and fearful of His punishment, Allaah will make all your matters easy.
And whoever has taqwa of Allaah – He makes matters easy for him. [Soorah at-Talaaq(65):4]
Sevently, you’re well on your way to success and prosperity
Everyone’s measure of success and how to get there is different, but you’re not really successful until Allaah declares you successful, and Allaah has outlined taqwa as the road to success and prosperity.
…and have taqwa of Allaah that you may be successful. [Soorah al-Baqarah, (2):189]
And the cherry on top, the rewards are even greater in your next life!
Verily, for the muttaqeen are Gardens of delight (Paradise) with their Lord. [Soorah al-Qalam, (68):34]
The rewards in the hereafter are even greater and the verses are too many to mention. The mutaqoon will be forgiven, saved from punishment, fear, and grief, will enter paradise, and be honoured with a special vip status!
May Allaah adorn us with taqwa so that we may earn His pleasure and reap its benefits. Let’s be even more ambition and ask Allaah to make us, not only people of taqwa, but leaders amongst the Mutaqeen!
And those who say: “Our Lord! Bestow on us from our wives and our offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes, and make us leaders for the Muttaqun. Those will be rewarded with the highest place (in Paradise) because of their patience. Therein they shall be met with greetings and the word of peace and respect. Abiding therein; excellent it is as an abode, and as a place to dwell. [Soorah Al-Furqaan (25): 74-76]
