There is a dua (supplication) or dhikr (rememberance) for, pretty much, every situation and occasion. And for every situation and occasion there are multiple athkaar one can say. We know that du’a (supplication) is the weapon of the believer and dhikr is a fortress, but in all our busyness we don’t get to say as many as we’d like to. So here are 5 cost effective athkaar to help you get the most out of your day.
1. When you wake up
الْحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ
Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ‘ahyana ba’da ma ‘amatana wa’ilayhin-nushur
Praise is to Allah Who gives us life after He has caused us to die and to Him is the return.
When you sleep at night Shaytan ties three knots at the back of your head saying, “You have a long night, so sleep”. Upon waking up, the first knot is untied when you mention Allaah. The second knot is untied when you make wudu. And all knots are loosened after you pray. Then “in the morning (you) will be active and in good spirits; otherwise (you) will be in bad spirits and sluggish in the morning”. Also, saying this dua is a reminder to be grateful to Allaah for giving you another day and another chance, and a motivation to make the most of your day because you will inevitably return to Him. What better way is there to start your day than uttering these beautiful words of praise, remembrance, and encouragement?! And we can definitely make use of the extra boost in energy.
2. Four phrases better than long time sitting in worship
سبحان الله وبحمده، عدد خلقه، ورضا نفسه، وزنة عرشه، ومداد كلماته
Subhan-Allahi Wa Bihamdihi, `Adada Khalqihi, Wa Rida Nafsihi, Wa Zinatah `Arshihi, Wa Midada Kalimatihi
Allah is free from imperfection and I begin with His praise, as many times as the number of His creatures, in accordance with His Good Pleasure, equal to the weight of His Throne and equal to the ink that may be used in recording the words (for His Praise)
Juwairiyah bint Al-Harith, the wife of Rasoolullaah, reported: “The Prophet came out from my apartment in the morning as I was busy in performing the dawn prayer. He came back in the forenoon and found me sitting there and said,”Are you still in the same position as I left you.” I replied in the affirmative. Thereupon the Prophet said, ‘I recited four phrases three times after I had left you. If these are to be weighed against all you have recited since morning, these will be heavier.’ And then he mentioned the dua above. This is amazing and a true mercy from Allah. As moms it’s not easy finding time to sit and engage in dhikr and ibaadah (worship) for an extended period especially during the weekday early morning rush.
3. When you’re leaving your home
بِسْمِ اللهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ
Bismillaahi, tawakkaltu ‘alallaahi, wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata ‘ illaa billaah.
In the Name of Allah, I have placed my trust in Allah, there is no might and no power except by Allah.
Our homes are our safest zones, and when we go out we have no idea what we will face. So we place our trust in Allaah to take care of us while we’re out, to help achieve what we went our for, and to bring us back safely. Also, Shaytan gets his hopes up when we (women) go out and so he beautifies us in the eyes of others, which may cause unwanted attraction. Say the dua for Allaah’s guidance and protection.
4. For your children
u‛eedhuk(um) bi kalimaat-illaahit-taammati min kulli shayṭaanin, wa haammatin, wa min kulli ‛aynin laammah
I commend you to the protection of Allah’s perfect words from every devil, vermin, and every evil eye.
You might be a mama bear, but there’s only so much you can protect your children from. Allaah is the true source of protection as He is aware of both the seen and unseen harms. Get into the habit of saying this du’a, especially when you find yourself outside after sunset.
5. When going to sleep
SubhanAllah 33x, Alhamdulillaah 33x, Allaahu akbar 34x
If your days are becoming hectic and your household duties are starting to really overwhelm you, and you can really use some extra help… turn to these three easy phrases. When Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet, became burdened by her duties and requested a servant from the Messenger of Allaah, he advised her and Ali to turn to this dhikr at bed time, as it would serve better than a servant.
